In the letter to the church of Ephesus in Revelation chapter 2 we find this charge “…you have left your first love…” and this recommendation “…do the first works”(NJKV) or “…do the works you did at first.”(HCSB) Someone has reported that the most effective time of witnessing in the life of a believer is the early months following their conversion. Their encounter with Jesus is fresh. They are eager to spread the good news.
Is it realistic to think we can keep our relationship with Jesus fresh? Does the honeymoon last forever? It would do us well to ponder this. In, of all places, the book of Lamentations says “…His compassions fail not. They are new every morning…” Revelation 21:5 tells us that He who sat on the throne said “Behold, I make all things new.”
Our relationship with the Lord was never meant to be routine and mechanical. It is intended to be a dynamic and living relationship. Absolutely nothing is more important than this. Delight in the Lord is the normal Christian life. It must be more than mere emotions, feelings, activities, and circumstances. It must be something real, deep, and alive. It must be marked by true and faithful obedience to His commands out of genuine holy romance and passion. A new believer tends to pray as if his or her life depended on it. This kind of ever-new relationship is a gift sustained by lifting up empty hands to a giving Father. Bro. Roger
