The Gospel as Power: A Prayer Focus PDF Print E-mail

Listen to this statement by Paul to the church of Thessalonica “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.”  At the beginning of Romans Paul declares “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”

The gospel is good news obviously.  The gospel is power.  I do not think it would be a stretch to say that Jesus implied the gospel has power like a river (John7:37-39).  Going back to the Thessalonian verse, are there incidences when the gospel comes only in word with no power?  Perhaps so, but how sad is that?!  In such cases the gospel has not really come at all!

Let me ask myself, has the gospel come in power in my life?  Ask yourself.  In what ways has it shown and does it show its power?  We must ask these questions not because we are power hungry but simply because the nature of the gospel is power.  Would you join me in making this a concentrated prayer focus for the New Year?  It has implications for our church, our community, our city, our state, and our world.
